How to Get Street-Legal UTV Insurance: Policies & Providers

Before you turn the key on a public road, you must secure liability insurance for your UTV. Standard off-road insurance policies are only valid for trail riding and private property, and they automatically void coverage if the vehicle is operated on a public street. To drive legally, you must obtain a "street-legal UTV policy" or add a road-use endorsement. This guide explains how to secure this coverage and what limits you need.

Why Standard Off-Road Insurance Isn't Enough

When you register a UTV for street use (e.g., getting a license plate), it is classified as a motor vehicle. If you hit a pedestrian or collide with a car on a public road, an off-road policy will deny the claim, leaving you personally liable for damages. You must tell your insurance agent that the vehicle has a license plate and will be operated on public streets.

Recommended Insurance Providers

Not all insurance companies cover street-legal UTVs. The three most active providers offering specialty policies are:

  • Progressive (Specialty): The market leader in UTV insurance. They offer an easy add-on for street-registered off-road vehicles.
  • GEICO (Powersports): Offers comprehensive and liability coverage for dual-use (street and trail) UTVs.
  • Allstate: Provides customizable policies specifically for registered utility vehicles.

Mandatory Coverage Limits

Your policy must meet the minimum liability limits required for passenger cars in the state where the vehicle is registered. For example, if you register in South Dakota, your policy must meet the "25/50/25" limit: $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage.
