State-by-State UTV Speed Limits & Slow-Moving Placar Rules

Even if your UTV has a license plate and is street-legal, you cannot drive it at any speed you want. Most states place specific speed restrictions on off-highway vehicles operating on public roads. Some states cap UTV road speeds at 35 or 45 mph, while others require you to display a reflective orange "Slow-Moving Vehicle" (SMV) triangle on the rear of the vehicle. This guide covers these speed limits and SMV triangle rules.

1. Maximum Speed Caps by State

Several states allow UTVs on public roads but restrict them to low-speed streets:

  • Washington: UTVs are restricted to roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less.
  • Alaska: Permitted on public roads with speed limits of 45 mph or less.
  • Texas: Street riding is limited to municipal roads with speed limits under 35 mph.
  • Utah and South Dakota: No specific UTV speed cap. Registered UTVs can travel at the posted speed limit of the road, including 65+ mph highways, though interstates remain off-limits.

2. Slow-Moving Vehicle (SMV) Triangle Rules

If you are operating your UTV under a farming/agricultural exemption or on local roads without a street license plate, many states require you to mount a reflective orange SMV triangle to the rear center of the vehicle. The triangle must be visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the rear. When displaying an SMV triangle, you are legally restricted to a maximum speed of 25 mph, regardless of the posted speed limit of the road.
